Vitamin D May Ease Asthma

Asthma can be one of the scariest problems you can have.  Not being able to breath can put you into a panic and make the problem even worse.  If you suffer from asthma, you may want to look at the amount of Vitamin D you have in your diet.

Research is showing that low levels of Vitamin D can lead to more severe asthma problems.  The study was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.  It compared the vitamin D levels in 54 people and compared that the severity of their asthma attacks.

Green Tea May Help Treat Uterine Fibroids

According to a new study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, green tea extract may be useful in treating uterine fibroids.  This condition affects 25% to 30% of U.S. women and can lead to all kinds of painful and debilitating problems.

In the study, mice were injected with fibroid cells.  Half of the mice were given given epigallocatechin gallate which is a polyphenol found in green tea and some fruits and vegetables.  The other half were not given EGCG.

The mice were observed for 8 weeks.  The mice that were given EGCG had fibroid growths that were smaller and weighed less than the control group and one of them mice had no growths.

School Lunch and the Child Nutrition Act

As the nation debates health care, the war in Iraq, and the still faltering economy, not much attention has been given to the Child Nutrition Act which can help our nations children get more nutritious lunches at school.  While it can be argued that nutrition is the responsibility of parents, the school lunch may be the best meal that many children get every day.

Below is an excerpt from the article then a link from the original article from the Huffington Post.

The Child Nutrition Act is being debated in Congress right now, which means we have a rare opportunity to actually improve how food for our youngest citizens is funded, sourced, defined, and prioritized. This window for change only arises once every five years.
Off to a good start in 2009, the Obama Administration included an additional $1 billion for child nutrition programs. Put into lunch money terms, that’s pocket change, but it’s a welcome jingle in the ridiculously low budgets faced by school cafeterias.

Study Shows Parents Make Healthy Choices When Given the Chance

No matter how much you try to eat healthy and make sure your kids get healthy foods, there is always the time when you are forced to eat at a fast food restaurant.  We know the foods available aren’t the healthiest, but some are better than others.

In a new study, it was shown that when parents had nutritional information available, they chose healthier foods for their kids.  This alone is enough justification to start putting nutritional information out in the open at fast food restaurants.  Makers of packaged foods are required to put this information on the package so you can see it before you buy it.  Restaurants should be forced to show you how many calories are the food you are about to order.

Of course, if you just use your head, it can be pretty easy to see that apple slices are better for you than french fries, but let’s not let them off the hook.
