If you are trying to build great abs, isolating your lower abs may seem like an essential part of your workout. Below are a couple lower ab exercises you can do at home.
Don’t worry about doing these every day though, your main concern should be complete strength building. A little bit of focused effort every now an then is plenty.
Doing lower ab exercises at home as I describe below doesn’t require you to buy any equipment so it will be easy on your bank account. Of course, I assume you own a chair and have enough floor space to lay on your back.
Seated Knee Raises: Sit on the edge of a chair. Put your hands on the sides of the chair and balance without leaning on the back of the chair. Now raise your knees up and lower them again without letting them touch the floor. You will be using your lower ab muscles to pull the legs up and will start to feel it after only a few reps.
Lying Knee Raises: Lay on your back with your legs off the ground. Your lower legs should be parallel to the floor. Curl your hips up which brings your legs higher off the ground. This action causes your abs to contract and again you should start feeling it after only a few repetitions.

Close your eyes and picture somebody with six pack abs. You may picture somebody with with a slim, flat stomach with outlines of the ab muscles below. You may picture a body builder with bulging abdominals. Which ever one you pictured, you can have if you are willing to work.
Before we go any further, I want you to declare to the world “I Want Six Pack Abs!” Say it out loud. There is power in verbally declaring your goals.
Ok, let’s get started. First, you need to know way more than I can share in this single article so I will make a couple of recommendations at the end for more information. What I am going to share is meant to get you started down the path to great abs.
Say it again: “I Want Six Pack Abs!”
Everything about great abs comes down to getting rid of belly fat. Everything you do should have this goal in mind. Start with what you eat. Cheeseburgers and fries will not get you where you want to go. You need to find a diet that you can live with then make sure you burn more calories than you consume.
Now, here is the real secret to getting six pack abs. Forget about doing traditional exercises like crunches. Crunches are one of the least effective ways to get great abs I can think of. All they do is strengthen your stomach a little. They do almost nothing to help you get rid of fat. Focus on exercises that work your whole body as well as your abs. This will increase the amount of fat you burn and still strengthen your stomach.
Here are a few of my favorite, non-traditional, abdominal exercises.

Before I even start, I want to warn you that most of these don’t sound like ab exercises, but trust me, they work your whole body (or most of it) including your abs. On top of that, they are way more effective at burning fat than traditional ab exercises so you are working on uncovering your abs while you build them. For example, think about swimming. The best exercise to build muscle and lose belly fat is the squat. You have to have strong core muscles to do squats and they are great full body exercises. You can do normal squats with the bar on your shoulder or front squats with the bar on your chest. If you want to be really advanced, you can even hold the bar over your head as you do them. Adding squats to your workout routine is the best way to start building great abs and losing belly fat.
If you want to do traditional ab exercises like crunches, try adding a twist. Using an exercise ball really increases the intensity of an ab workout. Balancing on the ball requires your abs to work no matter what exercise you are doing on the ball so you can get an ab workout while working your arms on an exercise ball. Now that’s high efficiency.

Another good extreme ab exercise is kickboxing. You don’t have to fight anybody, just get a body bag and start working out. Kicking and punching the bag will give you a really good workout and build strong abdominal muscles. Again, this will burn a lot of calories and really get you moving towards ripped abs which is what your probably after.

If you are trying to get great abs, you have probably tried at least one ab machine or at least thought about it. Some of these can be effective, but most of them just don’t do much for you. If you are looking for ab exercises you can do without equipment, below are a couple creative ideas.
Many of the ab exercises that have been around for a long time don’t require any special equipment. Exercises like crunches and leg raises can be done virtually anywhere with no equipment at all.
There are also some non traditional exercises that can be done without buying any equipment. You may not think of these as ab exercises, but they are very effective at working a lot of muscles in your body including your abs. On top of that they help you burn fat which will uncover your abs which is what you really want anyways.
Try doing wind sprints. Sprint for 25, 50, or 100 yards then walk to catch your breath then sprint again. This will work your whole body and really help you burn off the belly fat. Just look at how ripped sprinters are.
Another great way to get a similar workout is to run steps. Go to a football stadium or another area that has steps and start working your whole body and burning fat to uncover your abs.
These last few bodies require access to some equipment, but you may have this stuff already so you don’t have to buy anything extra. Jumping rope is a great exercise that burns fat and strengthens your body. Mountain biking is another way to get a good full body workout. If you have access to a pool, swimming is another great full body workout.
