The maqui berry is becoming a popular health supplement that may rival the popularity of the acai berry. There still is not a lot known about this new super food, but below is information from what I deem to be reliable sources.
The maqui berry is purple and grows on a small evergreen tree that grows in Argentina and Chile. Maqui berries and leaves have long been used in traditional native medicines by the Mapuche Indians. According to phytochemicals.info and other sources, the maqui berry has more antioxidants than acai berries.
The maqui berry has been used by the Mapuche to treat many ailments and improve strength and stamina. The antioxidants are thought to reduce inflammation and protect cells form free radicals.
Recently, the maqui berry has been used in health supplements that are starting to become popular around the world. As with the acai berry, you will find free trials that could cost you more money in the long run than just purchasing them up front. If you choose a free trial, make sure you know the details of the offer you are signing up for. Sassafras Station will strive to keep you up to date on good offers and focus on package deals instead of free trials.

Snacking is a natural part of our day so what we snack on should be natural as well. Pistachios are a super quick snack that is loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber. With only 160 calories per serving (about 50 nuts) they are also the lowest calorie snack nut you can buy.
Most of us start feeling hungry around 10am and 2pm – just a few hours after we’ve eaten breakfast and lunch. By that time our blood sugar levels start to drop and we are tempted to grab a sugar filled snack. What we should be grabbing is a snack that has a high amount of fiber. Eating foods rich in fiber will help keep your blood sugar levels constant throughout the day which means you’ll avoid that sudden drop and won’t be grabbing sugary snacks or caffeine. Studies also show that a diet high in fiber will help you feel fuller longer and can help you lose weight. One serving of pistachios contain 2.9 grams of fiber which is more than many other nuts, breads, raisins, figs and other “health” foods.
When snacking in the evening it’s even more important that you chose a healthy, low calorie snack. As you get closer to the end of your day there is little chance you will be working off many of the calories that you consume. Not only are pistachios low in calories but they also offer a visual clue of how much you’ve eaten. Unlike sitting down with a bag of chips while you watch television and not knowing exactly how much you’ve consumed, the pistachio shell that is left behind is a reminder of how much you’ve eaten. Your eyes can see a large pile of shells and can send a signal to your brain that you’ve eaten a lot of something. This can create a feeling of satisfaction that you won’t get with other snack foods.
The next time you need a snack grab a handful of pistachios. Not only will you end your hunger you will also refuel your body so you can keep up with your busy day.

When you buy pistachios in the grocery store you can buy them either shelled or unshelled. Buying them already shelled is often at least twice the price of buying the unshelled ones and doing it yourself. Unfortunately many people don’t know the easy way to shell a pistachio and they end up with sore thumbs.
The first pistachio you open will most likely be the most difficult. Pry the shell off with your fingers and thumbs. Once you get that first one off your next ones will be much easier and faster. Take one of the shell halves that you just removed and put the top of the small end into the cracked opening of your next pistachio. Twist the discarded shell like you would a screwdriver. The pistachio should crack open the rest of the way!
