Ivy is an evergreen climbing plant that has been used for many years to treat asthma, help treat coughs and even used in creams to lighten stretch marks.

In many parts of the world it’s used as an expectorant (it thins the mucous and loosens coughs). It also thins the mucous in the respiratory passages which makes it a good remedy for asthma, acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis and colds.

One double blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated 24 children for three days. Some were given a placebo and some were given ivy leaf extract twice day for the three day duration of the study. The children that were given the ivy leaf extract showed improvement in their asthma symptoms.

Extensive monitoring shows that ivy leaf rarely causes any side effects. The only documented side effects were nausea and vomiting with excessive does of ivy leaf. It is not recommended to use during pregnancy because it contains a substance called emetine which has shown to increase contractions.

The dosage for children is 25 drops of ivy leaf extract in water twice a day. The adult dose is 50 drops twice a day.

Butterbur is a perennial shrub that is native to northern Asia and parts of Europe. It has been used for many years to treat coughs and other allergy symptoms. It is also believed to reduce muscles spasms and it has an anti-inflammatory effect. Because of all of these reasons it’s considered a natural cure for treating asthma that is triggered by allergies.

Several studies have been done to evaluate the effectiveness of butterbur in treating asthma. One study at the University of Dundee in Scotland showed that butterbur added to the anti-inflammatory effect of inhalers. Another study which followed 80 people for four months showed that taking butterbur improved their asthma symptoms and 40% of the sufferers were able to cut back their asthma by the end of the study.

A study published in the March 2006 edition of Advances in Therapy also showed the benefits of butterbur in treating asthma. Researchers evaluated 580 patients that suffered with seasonal allergies and gave them butterbur for two weeks. At the beginning of the study all 580 participants were suffering with stuffy noses, itchy eyes and skin irritants. Two weeks later at the end of the study 90% of the participants noticed a significant improvement in their symptoms.

Butterbur isn’t for everyone. Butterbur is part of the ragweed family so if you have an allergy to ragweed, daisies, marigolds or chrysanthemums you should not take butterbur. Some of the side effects of butterbur can include indigestion, headache, nausea and fatigue.

You can purchase butterbur in capsule and tablet form. Do not use any butterbur product that says it contains “raw butterbur”. They can contain substances that are toxic to the liver and kidneys. Any product you purchase from your local health food should be fine.

Asthma is a condition that affects millions of Americans each year. For many it’s caused by an allergy to pollen, dander or dust or some other airborne allergen or air pollutant. Before you start this diet, check with your doctor if your body will adapt to the “no solid food” routine – 10 days may seem like a relatively short period, but you need both mental resolve and physical tolerance to finish this diet, especially if it is your first time.

The Lemonade diet is a great way to detox your body and lose weight in the short term. Your long term health and body weight however depend on your ability to stick to a regular exercise routine and follow a healthy eating pattern and diet on a daily basis.
