The goji berry is starting to become a very popular health and fitness supplement. Just like the acai berry, it has lots of antioxidants. It is being used in several weight loss supplements and has been promoted as a potential healthy snack (when dried).

So what exactly is a goji berry? It is a berry that grows on a shrub that is in the nightshade family and is sometimes called a wolfberry. The most common places where it grows are Mongolia, Tibet, and China.

The goji berry isn’t usually found fresh unless you live close to where it grows. You may, however, be able to find it in a dried form that looks like a raisin (except that it is reddish in color) or find it as a health supplement.

Goji Berry Health Benefits

While goji berry health benefits have been acknowledged for centuries in Far East countries like Tibet, India, and China, they have not gotten a lot of exposure in most of the world. According to About.com (in the alternative medicine section), there are multiple goji berry health benefits that you may experience. Some of those benefits are listed below.

The goji berry has a high amount of antioxidants which is one of the reason it has become so popular. While antioxidant content varies depending on who is measuring, the goji berry is considered very high by all sources I have seen. One source, OracValues.com, reports that it is considerably higher than blueberries but lower than acai berries.

Goji Berry Health Benefit Studies

While there isn’t a lot of information out there, according to About.com, the goji berry health benefits have been studied in at least two human studies.

There was a study done in 1994 in China. In that study, 79 people were tested and it was found that their cancer treatment worked better if they also took goji berries.

In test tube studies, the goji berry appears to prevent the growth of some cancer cells, reduce blood glucose levels, and even lower cholesterol levels.

While more research needs to be done, the goji berry does look like it could be a very beneficial health supplement. Please note that the FDA (to my knowledge) has not evaluated any claims related to the goji berry or potential goji berry health benefits.
